CentOS Stream is a continuously delivered Enterprise Linux distribution where changes are integrated and tested on the development path toward RHEL.
What is CentOS and what does it do?
The current CentOS model is CentOS Stream, a continuously delivered Enterprise Linux distribution. It provides a visible place where changes intended for the RHEL development path are integrated, built and tested.
CentOS Stream is not a rebuild created after a completed RHEL release. Its position is earlier in the flow. That difference defines both its value and its release expectations.
Its position in the Enterprise Linux flow
Fedora is the broader upstream environment where many changes begin. CentOS Stream carries continuously integrated Enterprise Linux work forward, and RHEL applies its downstream product process to that work.
The relationship does not mean that every package moves unchanged or on an identical schedule. Build systems, tests, gating and product decisions shape what appears at each point. Comparisons should therefore record enabled repositories and actual package versions rather than only distribution names.
Release and validation are continuous
Packages enter repositories through a delivery pipeline instead of waiting for one large point release to reveal all changes. This makes upcoming behavior visible earlier and creates a place for testing and contribution.
Continuous delivery still requires controlled updates. Dependency tests, staged rollout and rollback planning remain important, especially when several packages change together. A passing package build is not the same as application compatibility.
Where CentOS Stream is useful
CentOS Stream is useful for several kinds of work:
- Developing software for the Enterprise Linux ecosystem.
- Testing compatibility before downstream RHEL delivery.
- Inspecting package changes and participating in the project workflow.
- Running systems whose update and support policy matches continuous delivery.
The same properties may be unsuitable for a workload that requires a vendor-certified platform or a different fixed lifecycle contract.
The selection boundary
Operating-system choice should begin with support, certification, package and update requirements. The CentOS name alone does not answer those questions. CentOS Stream offers earlier visibility into Enterprise Linux precisely because its position differs from RHEL.
Repository sources, update windows and application validation need explicit ownership. When a third-party product publishes a support matrix, that matrix should be checked directly instead of inferring compatibility from package similarity.
